This last September I had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of people for Jordon & Etai's wedding in the Columbia River Gorge at beautiful Bridal Veil Lakes. During the months preceding the wedding Jordon, Etai and myself had worked on musical ideas and details for the wedding and everything had come together nicely in the weeks prior. All Summer long the Gorge was clear, warm and bright with the sun, but on this Saturday, late in the month we finally got the Oregon weather we all know so well. It rained. And rained. And rained. So we improvised...
While the teams at Bridal Veil Lakes and coordinator extraordinaire Kandice of Rose & Stone were busy arranging tents to protect guests from the rain and making last minute adjustments, I settled in to get my equipment setup. With some extra greenery from Bramble Floral around the DJ table I was feeling good about everything in spite of the weather. Guests arrived by bus and the champagne started flowing, everyone gathered under the outdoor pavilion with lots of hugs and high fives - we were off to a great start. Etai and Jordon wanted a soulful, festive and fun mood so I had some classic soul records spinning from Earth, Wind & Fire, Skull Snaps, Stevie Wonder & Maze with Frankie Beverly to get things started.
As guests huddled into the wooden pavilion, Jordon entered through the side to one of her and Etai's favorite songs, "Lovely Day" by ALT-J. It was perfect. The joy radiating from friends and family was more than enough to keep everyone warm and smiling.
After the vows were said and the kiss complete, the couple retreated to the classic soul jam by Marvin Gaye, "How Sweet It Is (to be loved by you)" Everyone started dancing and singing along. As people made their way to the bar I transitioned the music to a gentler vibe with hand-picked indie favorites of Etai and Jordon's that included songs from Sufjan Stephens, Bright Eyes and more ALT-J for cocktails and dinner.
The night ended with an incredibly joyous and funky dance party with everything from Evelyn "Champagne" King, to Bob Marley, to Van Morrison and finally Beyoncé. It was so much fun, everyone was yelling to keep the music on as we ran out of time and the busses showed up so we ended on a slow and altogether lovely note with Van Morrison's "Crazy Love". We could have gone all night.
