Mark and Mariana's Bozeman Wedding

Last summer I had the incredible experience of collaborating with Mark and Mariana on their destination wedding in Bozeman, MT. It was a highlight of my year and a great challenge to blend of all three of our musical ideas together into what turned out to be THE DANCE PARTY of 2016. Mark & Mariana loved funky jams, disco and indie dance pop, so I was right at home when we first started talking about music. In addition, Mariana's family is from Bolivia, where they have an incredible tradition called Hora Loca, which they wanted to incorporate into the dance party. (You can read about Hora Loca in a NYT article here). In short, it's about an hour of dancing where the music goes Latin, hats & masks come out, tequila flows, and the party turns up to 11.

Mark & Mariana had every detail dialed in and it was so much fun executing their ideas. On the day of the wedding, the weather was spotty, with storm clouds rolling through the Montana skies, over the area where the outdoor ceremony was being held. Just as everyone was seated, a huge flash storm surged down, and everyone retreated in the rain to a covered area.

We tried again and just as the sun broke, I started, "Here Come the Sun" by the Beatles, and Mariana emerged from the barn with her father. They walked down the aisle and it was really beautiful.

The recessional song was "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher, by Jackie Wilson. It was perfect and celebratory, and reflected everyone's mood. The cocktail hour was full of low-key but funky latin vibes and created the perfect backdrop for the international guest list and fun atmosphere.

When it came time for the grand entrance before dinner, Mark, Mariana and the wedding party danced into the main hall to Howard Huntsberry's incredible version of "Higher & Higher" from the Ghostbusters soundtrack to bring everything full circle. The guests were on their feet clapping along. So much fun.

Mark & Mariana launched straight into their first dance, (ironically) "Last Dance" by Donna Summer, complete with a cleverly choreographed dance. Again, these two know how to throw a party.

After dinner and several heartwarming speeches, (the highlight being Mariana's father's beautiful tribute, which didn't leave a dry eye in the house), I kicked off the dance party with "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson. Soon everyone was on the floor having a great time. Some of my favorite tracks from the dance party included, "She Can't Love You" by Chemise, "House Party" by Fred Wesley, an amazing group spectacle to "Shout!" by the Isley Brothers, lot's of Chic & Sister Sledge and finally some Holy Ghost, Cut Copy and Daft Punk.

Then the lights came on... HORA LOCA! The waiters brought trays of tequila out to the dance floor, along with masks, props and glow-sticks. We started with "Magalenha" By Sergio Mendes (which has this amazing drum intro), along with songs from Elvis Crespo, Los Hermanos Rosario and more. The dance floor went crazy.

"I Will Follow You" Indie Wedding Playlist Inspiration

We work with couples who love music, new and old.

Through our process of collaboration, we learn about the music that our clients love, and our repertoire grows organically along the way. We work pretty hard at staying up with new music too, from the Indie Vibes you'll find in the playlist, to Hip Hop, Pop, Underground and more.

Below you'll find a simple playlist of Indie Love songs, think of them as inspiration for walking down the aisle, a first dance or a relaxed dinner atmosphere. Give a listen and get inspired. We will release a new playlist in the coming weeks, with more inspiration in a different musical vein. Until then...

Etai & Jordon - Bridal Veil Lakes

This last September I had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of people for Jordon & Etai's wedding in the Columbia River Gorge at beautiful Bridal Veil Lakes. During the months preceding the wedding Jordon, Etai and myself had worked on musical ideas and details for the wedding and everything had come together nicely in the weeks prior. All Summer long the Gorge was clear, warm and bright with the sun, but on this Saturday, late in the month we finally got the Oregon weather we all know so well. It rained. And rained. And rained. So we improvised...

While the teams at Bridal Veil Lakes and coordinator extraordinaire Kandice of Rose & Stone were busy arranging tents to protect guests from the rain and making last minute adjustments, I settled in to get my equipment setup. With some extra greenery from Bramble Floral around the DJ table I was feeling good about everything in spite of the weather. Guests arrived by bus and the champagne started flowing, everyone gathered under the outdoor pavilion with lots of hugs and high fives - we were off to a great start. Etai and Jordon wanted a soulful, festive and fun mood so I had some classic soul records spinning from Earth, Wind & Fire, Skull Snaps, Stevie Wonder & Maze with Frankie Beverly to get things started.

As guests huddled into the wooden pavilion, Jordon entered through the side to one of her and Etai's favorite songs, "Lovely Day" by ALT-J. It was perfect. The joy radiating from friends and family was more than enough to keep everyone warm and smiling.

After the vows were said and the kiss complete, the couple retreated to the classic soul jam by Marvin Gaye, "How Sweet It Is (to be loved by you)" Everyone started dancing and singing along. As people made their way to the bar I transitioned the music to a gentler vibe with hand-picked indie favorites of Etai and Jordon's that included songs from Sufjan Stephens, Bright Eyes and more ALT-J for cocktails and dinner.

The night ended with an incredibly joyous and funky dance party with everything from Evelyn "Champagne" King, to Bob Marley, to Van Morrison and finally Beyoncé. It was so much fun, everyone was yelling to keep the music on as we ran out of time and the busses showed up so we ended on a slow and altogether lovely note with Van Morrison's "Crazy Love". We could have gone all night.
